Dave Grohl wrote and recorded the entire album himself, apart from a guest guitar spot by Greg Dulli, with the assistance of producer Barrett Jones at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. He claimed that he recorded the album just for fun, describing it as a cathartic experience to recover from the death of Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain.
That slickness arrives via producer Gil Norton, hired based on his work with the Pixies, but he manages to give The Colour and the Shape almost too sleek a sheen, something that comes as a shock after the raggedness of the group’s debut. Even the glossy final mix of Nevermind has nothing on the unapologetic arena rock of The Colour and the Shape - it’s all polished thunder, rock & roll that’s about precision not abandon.

Except, of course, things didn’t pan out quite like that. Whether Dave subsequently tracked down his old buddy is unclear, but it is known that The Colour And The Shape marked the arrival of Foo Fighters the band in emphatic style. It achieved critical and commercial success too, reaching number three in the UK charts (it remains the band’s biggest seller in the US ). The following year, the album was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Rock Album category. Despite ultimately losing out to Sheryl Crow’s third album The Globe Sessions, The Colour And The Shape’s place in rock history was secured.
It's pretty cool to see the instrumental tracks for TCATS. However, there is no archive for any. MOGG tracks from the album. Does Nick happen to have them? 196 Views.
Probably the best album to ever be released by the Foo Fighters, "The Colour & The Shape" further solidified Dave Grohl stepping out of grunge's shadow and making peace with the ghost of Kurt Cobain. Just about all the songs here on this album are catchy and seem made for radio friendly, but underneath that surface is a demonically comical feel combined with a lot of emotion
Foo Fighters were formed in 1995 by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. Unfortunately the bands musical quality stopped rising after the Foo’s second official release The Colour And The Shape. After that album there seemed to be a slight decline in the quality of the bands music. Although they haven’t been able to top their second release yet, I myself till have high hope for the future. The Colour And The Shape is sort of a gloomy, depressing album. Many tracks seem to deal with relationship problems and etc. Based on that you probably won’t want to listen to this album everyday, unless your life is extremely depressing.
In many ways, Foo Fighters’ second album, ‘The Colour and the Shape,’ is really their first. Or at least their first as a real band. Dave Grohl made the group’s 1995 self-titled debut as a solo project - basically demos recorded by himself in a Seattle studio with a producer in less than a week. Grohl played all of the instruments (except for one guitar part) and dug up a handful of old songs he had written when he was in Nirvana. The new songs he wrote tried to come to terms with Kurt Cobain’s death. Foo Fighters weren’t supposed to be the next chapter in Grohl’s career, but they turned out.
