The overtures are Weber’s main lasting contribution to the operatic world, his operas themselves having not lasted the ravages of time. Critical opinion blames the poor libretti and plots for most of that decline. However, the overtures are another matter and all deliver plenty of musical interest capable of sustaining repeated listening. Alternative collections of the overtures are few and far between and this set must be considered as one of the very best made in the stereo age and certainly among the current choices.

He wrote four overtures for the work (the three Leonore overtures as well as the Fidelio overture). Each in its way can be said to represent dramatic themes in the opera, and no one by itself captures the full essence of the work.
