Delaney Bramlett, one of the more admired musicians, songwriters and producers of the 70's, passed away early Saturday at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles from complications of gall-bladder surgery. He was 69. Bramlett was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi where he worked the cotton fields as a teen and eventually joined the Navy. After a three-year stint, he moved to what would become his lifelong home, Los Angeles, and began hanging around the studios and music establishements. Delaney & Bonnie had their biggest album in 1970 with On Tour with Eric Clapton, recorded at a late-1969 show. The album went to number 29 on the . charts and spawned the minor hit Comin' Home. Their notoriety grew as they became friends with artists throughout the rock world and joined John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band for a tour of Europe.

Thank God. Delaney Bramlett. Singer, songwriter, guitarist Delaney Bramlett (1939 – 2008) was one of the most unheralded influences in late sixties, early seventies rock who remained a creative volcano until his untimely death. Eric Clapton, in his biography, wrote, Delaney taught me all I know about singing.

It’s also perhaps worth mentioning that he also played some beautiful acoustic guitar solos, I’m thinking of Learning How To Love You and Dark Sweet Lady in particular. Meanwhile, he discovered slide guitar through a mixture of Delaney Bramlett and Dave Mason around the time of the Delaney and Bonnie tour, and I think he felt emancipated by it. At that level I think it freed him from the pressure of not being a gun slinging hot licks guy, but it later became his unique voice, which is where the Indian influence comes in.

It gets downright hard and funky on "Keep It Going," a tune that Bramlett co-wrote with Elvin Bishop. This is snaky, voodoo funk at its best

Rock guitarist Delaney Bramlett, who collaborated with such artists as George Harrison and Eric Clapton, died in a Los Angeles hospital following gallbladder surgery. His wife, Susan Lanier-Bramlett, said he died on Saturday after seven hard months of ill health. I held him and he held on up until the last breath with which he went in peace to the light and on into eternity, she said in a statement. The Mississippi native first gained renown in the late 1960s as part of the southern-fried rhythm and blues combo Delaney & Bonnie, which he formed with his first wife, Bonnie Lynn. The gifted duo were often overshadowed by their Friends, as their backing group was known. Among them was Clapton, who regularly performed as a low-key sideman.
