Duets with the Spanish Guitar is an album by Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida with vocalist Salli Terri and flautist Martin Ruderman. On the recording, Almeida arranged classical and folk repertoire with Latin musical forms. Recording engineer Sherwood Hall III won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Classical Album at the first Grammy Awards in 1959. Salli Terri was nominated for Best Classical Vocal Performance.

I think I bought this album in the original vinyl 33-1/3 rpm somewhere around 1961 or 1962, when I was a college music student. I had always loved Villa-Lobos' "Bacchianas Brasilieras" and this album had the 5th of the set on it, plus the "Pavane Pour une Infante Défunte"--So, I bought it more or less on a lark. What a great surprise! The Brazilian vocals of the late, great Sallyi Terri (1922-1996) on this record are, quite simply, stupendous! Matched with Almeida's wonderful guitar, the album is haunting, beautiful, colorful, even magical.

In 1958, Salli Terri joined guitarist Laurindo Almeida and flautist Martin Ruderman on the Grammy winning Duets with the Spanish Guitar, an album widely considered to be the first classical crossover album. In this recording, Almeida arranges standard classical and folk repertoire through the prism of several Latin musical forms, including the modenha, charo, maracatu and boi bumba a prize winner in my collection.
