Janet Feder – Songs with Words". Retrieved May 23, 2012. Ironic Universe is a 2006 double album of prepared guitar music by Janet Feder and Fred Frith. Second, Songs with Words represents one of the finest modern LP pressings I've ever y quiet and monumentally spacious due to a novel arrangement of 32 microphones placed strategically around Janet as she played. Every once in a while I receive an LP from a small independent artist or label, presumably from a limited pressing of 500 to 1000, and I'm impressed that the grooves are clean and the sound quality is far better than what you might get from a major label. Upon first listen, T H I S C L O S E provides a more potent first impression than Songs with Words-this is the Janet Feder album that might have won over more of those audiophiles in that hotel room back in San Francisco.

Happily, Janet Feder is part of that tradition, and while her various devices - bra fasteners, wires, beads, alligator clips, etc. - produce some rather peculiar buzzing and chiming timbres, the results are no less "normal" than the sound of a Delta bluesman applying a jackknife or bottleneck to guitar strings. And like the Delta bluesman (or the Appalachian hillbilly who comes up with eccentric tunings or finger-picking techniques), Feder's experiments always have a solid musical context

AAAC/stefan-te Janet.

Denver-based guitarist Janet Feder isn’t interested in fitting in. The 56-year-old plays baritone guitars exclusively, often using alternate tunings, and she further distinguishes herself by utilizing prepared guitars adorned with various objects on her strings (like metal rulers, beads, thread, horsehair, and rocks), producing sounds that are by turns soothing and disorienting, lush and discordant. Stylistically, Feder covers a lot of ground. She touches on elements of jazz, classical, folk, minimalism, and s combining genres within the space of a single song  . Feder has issued a handful of recordings-Icyimi (1995), Speak Puppet (2001), Ironic Universe (2006, a duet with Frith), Songs with Words (2012), and Leavings (2014)-that spread the word of her iconoclastic approach to the guitar, and now she’s released her most fully realized work with the album THISCLOSE. Songs don’t always behave in traditionally accepted ways on THISCLOSE, and that’s one of the album’s many charms.
