Way back in 1996, Rod Modell (he of Deepchord and Echospace fame) joined forces with Chris Troy as Waveform Transmission. They released one, CD-only album, V. 9, before going their separate ways. 21 years on, they've reunited for this superb follow-up on Astral Industries.

In a similar vein to V. 9, the album’s brighter moments are counterbalanced by the harsh, empty coldness of outer-space. By ". " the music’s weightless orbit drifts further into the unknown, vividly characterized by atmospheric ruptures and distant signals. Subsumed by this universal vastness, the album’s closing moments (". "-"2. 9") yield to a melancholy and acceptance that’s strangely comforting, rather than overwhelmingly stark. Inevitably, two decades have given Modell and Troy breathing space to come back to Waveform Transmission with another inspired and refreshing volume of music.

As Waveform Transmission, Rod Modell (DeepChord) and Chris Troy recorded an album documenting their sessions in a small dark room, in the basement of the WSGR FM 9. radio station in Port Huron, Michigan, while live on the air 10/29/95, from 11 PM through 1 AM. The broadcast was dispersed throughout Chemical Valley (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada), and recorded direct to DAT from the radio station console.

9 proceeds from where the first (V . 9) left off, with deep and detailed panoramic soundscapes that glide elegantly between bright, floral reveries, and sparser, more austere territory. Each side features one 18-minute piece, typically structured in a binary form. The first three tracks follow this structure, laying pulsating currents of organic, effervescent textures in the first half, and then proceeding into their darker counterparts. Although the final track (. -2. 9) is also split into two sections, it acts more as a concluding piece to the album.

V2.0-V2.9 coming soon on Astral Industries.

I find this pretty dull and lifeless, lacking in texture and nuance, even by the standards of minimal drone ambient.

This is an interesting release to comment on. If you're familiar with Rod Modell then you know his dub techno work under the names Deepchord and Echospace. This release, is nothing like them. This is minimal drone ambient music. Every track manages to sound different and stand out, this isn't the typical boring stuff that floods the genre these days. Throughout the 10 tracks there are field recordings, NASA transmissions and even recordings of paranormal activity. All these elements really help build a creepy atmosphere for the CD, but honestly, this is the perfect album for late night relaxing. Rod Modell never seems to disappoint.
