I like my thin, snappy strings. I think what's being discussed above is just befuddlement about terms. D standard tuning on a six-string is the same as A standard tuning on a seven-string. It just has an extra low string. That's completely independent of the scale length of the neck. Longer scales are often called 'baritone' because it's usually used for lower pitches, but that's all it means. If one uses the same string gauges at the same scale length, D standard and A standard will, on the first six strings, have identical tension.
