In Japanese the word "Kodo" conveys two meanings: "heartbeat" the primal source of all rhythm and, read in a different way, the word can mean "children of the drum," a reflection of Kodo's desire to play their drums simply, with the heart of a child. Kodo strives to both preserve and re-interpret traditional Japanese performing arts.

Nihon Daiko's music features daiko drums, but it also incorporates other instrumentation including the flute and the shamisen. The first track, the folk song Akita Ondo, is the most produced and even features voice. The drumming remains dominant on the entire album, but the other instruments lend a sense of melody to some of the songs. Not all daiko groups are the same, thank goodness.
