Dial-A-Poem is a phone-based service started in 1968 by poet John Giorno after a phone conversation with his friend William Burroughs. Fifteen phone lines were connected to individual answering machines; anyone could phone Giorno Poetry Systems and listen for free to a poem offered from various live recordings. The venture was a success from 1969 on, and the poems dealt with numerous social issues such as the Vietnam War and the sexual revolution

Dial-A-Poem was a New York City poetry project started in 1968, by poet John Giorno. It used the telephone system, to spread poetry recorded by poets and artists. For a period of about 4 years, anyone could dial 212-628-0400 on a rotary telephone and hear a poem. Dial-a-Poem offered poetry for the everyday caller. The program of poems changed regularly; anyone could make a phone call each day and encounter a different work by a new artist. After the experiment ended, Dial-a-Poem continued through album releases of poetry into the 90s. John Giorno founded the not-for-profit production company Giorno Poetry Systems (GPS) and organized a number of early multimedia poetry experiments and events. A friend of Andy Warhol, he was the subject of Warhol’s 1963 experimental ‘anti-film’ Sleep.

The Chemical Brothers have a new album in the world, No Geography, and it samples a few recordings from the "Dial-A-Poem" series. Los Angeles Times's Randall Roberts spoke with Tom Rowlands of Chemical Brothers, asking what drew him to the "Dial-A-Poem" poets. I came across it on Ubuweb, which is this amazing resource. Basically every interesting avant-garde thing ever made seems to have wound up there. I read the blurb and it was such an interesting idea. The first one I heard was by Diane Di Prima - Revolutionary Letter When we heard free yourself, free me,.
