Salsa Encendida was issued in 1978, which saw the group follow in the same direction as their previous release, but it would be Tipica '73's next release that proved to be a major step forward.
This final album from the influential but fractured 1970s salsa band Tipica 73 paid passionate homage to charanga, one of the Cuban musical styles that parented salsa. For all the swinging, hopped-up party atmosphere, downtown jazz sings through these tracks as well, particularly in horns and flute that play their assigned roles and then break out of them for brief but exciting spells. They cover Tito Puente's "A Donde Vas" and Cachao's "Chanchullo," among many other excellent songs.
Típica 73 was a popular New York Cuban charanga and salsa band in the 1970s and early 1980s, formed with a number of musicians from Ray Barretto's band. The term típica refers to the "typical" configuration of a Cuban charanga with violin, and 73 to the year of founding the group. Típica 73's music was notable for its experimental style, and was the first US-based salsa orchestra to record in Cuba with the album Típica 73 En Cuba Intercambio Cultural
