Complete your Aesop Rock collection. That’s when I knew that at some point between his 2011 album None Shall Pass and his newly released Skelethon, Aesop had finally snipped the final remaining threads that had been tying him to the fringes of rational thought. Either that, or he had just stopped trying to put his ideas into terms that were meant to be understood. We waited for a couple of hours to hear classics such as Night Light, Day Light, Big Bang, and No Regrets, but were given nothing but incomprehensible tracks off Skelethon. If Aesop had replaced BIG WIZ with a live band, the show would have been a huge success,.
Aesop Rock's sixth album, his first without any Blockhead beats or guest rappers, evokes the self-doubt, sleepless nights, and isolated focus required to finish something great. This is rap as Rorschach blot. Pick over Skelethon at your own peril. The portmanteau breaks down to the marathon of skeletons. 360 chambers of death, kid. Probably the most logical left turn for the Long Island-hatched rapper who warned "Abandon All Hope" on his first video: body splayed into a crucified scarecrow, blood and tar on the vocals, words loaned from the inscription above the Inferno. By 23, he'd died 1,000 Deaths and vowed to die a thousand more
Aesop Rock hasn’t ever truly met his potential, and this can be attributed to disharmony in his discography. The New-York-born rapper loves strong beats as much as cerebral storytelling and ess lyrical play, but his problem’s always been balancing the two. Labor Days bolstered abstract lyrics that had a spring in their step, but that were done a disservice with the album’s dry production that offered nothing new. None Shall Pass featured great production, but tracks that failed to come together as a coherent whole. Skelethon is the most natural Aesop release in years. There’s a wide variety of ideas at play throughout the album, but never does the display of versatility feel forced. For instance, one aspect of the album that’s immediately noticeable is how it features many tracks that are among Aesop’s greatest.
