Exotic Birds and Fruit is the seventh full-length studio album by British progressive rock band Procol Harum. It was released in 1974. Of special note is the release of the album in Argentina, calling the album "Pájaros Y Frutas Exóticas" (literally translated as "Birds and Exotic Fruit"). The cover artwork for the album is by Jakob Bogdani, a noted Hungarian artist whose paintings centred on exotic birds and fruit.
Exotic Birds and Fruit was recorded at London’s AIR studios during the winter of 1973-74, but there was a rough period of power outages during the recording sessions, due to wage disputes and energy saving brought in by Prime Minister Edward Heath’s ‘Three-Day Week’. As a result a generator had to be brought into the studio so that the band could meet the deadline for release in the spring of 1974. Despite the difficulties of recording, Exotic Birds and Fruit is something quite extraordinary. Fresh Fruit should definitely be up there with Mabel and Good Captain Clack. Procol Harum definitely have a great sense of humour, this song covering the healthiest diet as recommended by doctors, also good for dogs as they chase the bouncing ball. The closing track, New Lamps for Old, is another hymn, as if recorded inside a church, Brooker moving from piano to electric Rhodes to give a wonderful heavenly end.
Information on sleeve: Procol Harum would like to thank for strings on "Nothing But The Truth". This album was recorded in dungeon no. 2 at AIR London Studios. The front cover painting was reproduced by kind permission of Roy Miles Fine Paintings, London. This album was produced for Strongman Productions. Printed in England by Robor Limited.
Exotic Birds And Fruit was recorded during the winter of 1973, 74 at AIR Studios at a period in British history when a three–day working week was imposed. Produced by Chris Thomas (his fifth for Procol) this album was a definite "let's get back to the rock songs album", as stated by Procol's Gary Brooker in 1974
