This magnificent compilation of the greatest Wagner singers and conductors of the 20s and early 30s is an absolute MUST for everyone who is remotely interrested in how Wagner was done in the past. The greatest attractions are the magnificent interpretations of Friedrich Schorr, Frida Leider and the young Lauritz Melchior.

After the disappointment of the failed March Revolution, Wagner neither revised his original ideas and beliefs fundamentally, nor did he abandon them, but a paradigm shift took place. Influenced particularly by Schopenhauer's philosophy, as of 1854 Wagner anticipates a renewal of aesthetic consciousness in the public sphere no longer as a result of violent change in external political and social conditions but, rather, views art as the paradigm itself, as the exemplary utopian role model of that very aspiring social-political constitution.

Lohengrin, WWV 75, is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition.

A Wagner greatest-hits album isn't really possible given the nature of his work, but this could work well as a collection of Wagner selections: it includes excerpts from works from the early Rienzi up to the "Ring" cycle, with an orchestral version of the Wesendonck-Lieder song cycle to bring down the curtain. Kaufmann has the power to pull off the high notes without a trace of distortion or loss of the thread of the action, and equally to excel in the less athletic idiom of the songs. He gets able support from the Orchestra of the German Opera Berlin under Donald Runnicles.

The following is a sortable list of cinema films which utilize music of Richard Wagner in their soundtracks (other than films of Wagner's operas themselves). Casual references (and use of the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin) are not included. Joe, Jeongwon and Sander L. Gilman (ed. (2010). Indiana University Press.

The first performance of the complete Ring Cycle was at the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth, Germany, in August 1876. Wagner drew from ancient Germanic, Scandinavian and Icelandic sagas as well as his own imagination to fashion his libretto, a sweeping saga of epic proportions. The cycle begins with the theft of a cache of magic gold at the bottom of the Rhine, and culminates with the destruction of the gods and Valhalla. Traditionally a night at the opera was considered by audiences to be an occasion for socializing. Wagner was intent on overseeing all aspects of the finished work and decided to build an opera house to his own specifications. Everything about the new theatre was designed to focus on the drama unfolding on stage. Each seat had a clear sightline to the stage. The expanded orchestra pit was covered to blend the instruments sound and to obscure the musicians lamps.
