The album's lead single was the title track, "(Theme from) Valley of the Dolls", from the film of the same name. The song was written by André Previn and Dory Previn, and had initially been intended for Judy Garland before she was fired from the film. Warwick's Scepter version of the song, however, differed from the John Williams version included in the film. This was because Warwick was signed to Scepter, and the soundtrack was released on 20th Century Records. The Dionne Warwick single peaked at on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in February 1968, at on the Cash Box and on the Record World charts during the spring of 1968. The LP was issued as number 568 in the Scepter Catalog. The cover art for this LP features Warwick on a black background, in an evening gown next to a studio chair.
Valley of the Dolls was first a huge novel about Hollywood's seamier effects on young actresses. Scandalous for The Sixties decade. Then, it became a big flashy movie with Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, Susan Hayward, & others. The song was on the radio in my area for a long time (Kansas City area) and was very popular for Dionne . Ms. Warwick, born Marie Dionne Warrick, celebrated her 73rd birthday two months ago on December 12th (2013).
