Description

And with a broken wing She still sings She keeps an eye on the sky With a broken wing She carries her dreams Man you ought to see her fly. One Sunday morning She didn't go to church He wondered why she didn't leave He went up to the bedroom Found a note by the window With the curtains blowin' in the breeze

My review from Audion #24, published February 1993...CARL PEBERDYMAN WITH FORKED BEARD DREAMS WITH BROKEN WING(TRG 004) MC 60mOver two years in the making, Carl Peberdy's first solo release is a refined and special treat. Carl, as is obvious from his multi-instrumental talents in The Rain Garden, is a dedicated explorer of ethnic cultures and their possibilities as a basis for more adventurous musics. Surprisingly a totally acoustic album, the instrumentation is very rich and varied, you'll find sitar, tabla, dulcimer, psaltery, whistle, various zithers, all types of ethnic percussion, and much more here, and although a few guests are featured, Carl plays most of the instruments himself. Influences at work that are quite obvious include: Stephan Micus, Osjan, Alan Stivell, and even a touch of George Harrison's WONDERWALL MUSIC. Yet, essentially, this is Carl's side of The Rain Garden sound, expanded and developed as a mostly dreamy, occasionally engrossing, and often surprising music, where the accent is on a well-balanced blend melody and invention. Fans of the sitar, and those yearning for more adventurous music in the vein of classic Stephan Micus will delight at this. I won't go into great detail in reviewing individual tracks here, as for much of the time (especially side 1) the music flows as one elaborately conceived suite. Carl does however throw a spanner in the works (on side 2) with the most eccentrically composed The Reluctant Radish, and the medieval Psalt of the Earth, surprises that make this an even more enjoyable album. For a debut solo this is indeed impressive!
