The Seven Deadly Sins is a satirical parable and the last co-operation between Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht. The present album is a re-release of the SWRmusic bestseller 9. 09 having the outstanding Anja Silja as Anna. The sung ballet is in nine movements, and was written in 1933 as Weill watched the Nazis seize power following the Reichstag fire of February 1933. Both Brecht and Weill knew that as Jewish men, Berlin could no longer be their home. He obtained the commission for Seven Deadly Sins while in Paris.

Weill: The 7 Deadly Sins. Weill: The 7 Deadly Sins. Anja Silja made this recording when she was well into the fourth decade of her performing career, but the role of Anna in Weill 's Die sieben Todsünden is well suited to a voice that sounds like it has had some experience. Silja, in fact, sounds more polished and refined than many of the singers who have taken this part, which Weill wrote for Lotte Lenya, who was hardly noted for the tonal beauty of her instrument. If anything, Silja sounds too operatic, and her performance lacks the rough-edged bite that can heighten the pathos of the piece.
