Description

Track listing (all compositions by Horace Silver). Horace Silver - piano Blue Mitchell - trumpet Junior Cook - tenor saxophone Gene Taylor - bass Louis Hayes - drums.

All (subtitled The United States of Mind Phase 3) is an album by jazz pianist Horace Silver released on the Blue Note label in 1972, featuring performances by Silver with Cecil Bridgewater, Harold Vick, Richie Resnicoff, Bob Cranshaw and Mickey Roker, with vocals by Andy Bey, Salome Bey and Gail Nelson. It is the third of a trilogy of albums later compiled on CD as The United States of Mind. All compositions by Horace Silver.

Horace Silver himself is probably the most reserved soloist on this album. Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson, and . Johnson all reach points in their solos where they play long, quick phrases. Horace Silver, on the other hand, plays very few notes in comparison to create his melodic ideas. Seven of the compositions were written by Horace Silver with Hank Mobley contributing "Hankerin" only.

In 1956, Horace Silver left Art Blakey to form his own group, the Horace Silver Quintet, a group that would record and perform actively for the next 40 years. The Horace Silver Quintet group and The Jazz Messengers would become known as groups which featured the best young talent in jazz, many of the alumni of these groups went on to become very important figures in jazz music. The trumpet players who came through Silver's group and the Jazz Messengers form a "who's who" list of jazz trumpet players from the 1950's-80's.

Horace Silver (born Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silva, September 2, 1928, Norwalk, Connecticut, United States) is an American jazz pianist and composer. Silver is known for his distinctive humorous and funky playing style and for his pioneering compositional contributions to hard bop. He was influenced by a wide range of musical styles, notably gospel music, African music, and Latin American music and sometimes ventured into the soul jazz genre.

All (Horace Silver album). 1. Album – Album, is a collection of audio recordings issued as a single item on CD, record, audio tape, or another medium. Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century album sales have mostly focused on compact disc and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used from the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl, an album may be recorded in a recording studio, in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places.

Biography by Chris Kelsey. The leading composer and pioneer of hard bop, plus a pianist who blended vintage R&B, gospel, blues, and Caribbean elements into jazz.

The tracks were later combined on the album Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers (1955); by then, this outfit was a cooperative quintet, and hard bop had been born. Vinyl albums running 15 minutes per side encouraged groups to develop extended solos. On the live version of Soft Winds, the tension escalates behind Mobley; Blakey and Silver switch off when the trumpet takes over, then build inexorably until the performance reaches its emotional peak. Based in California since the 1970s, Silver was granted various honours by the US state and, in 2005, received a President's Merit award at the Grammy Salute to Jazz ceremony. He also set up the Horace Silver Foundation to give scholarships to aspiring jazz musicians. His autobiography, Let's Get to the Nitty Gritty, was published in 2005.
