In 1990 Lycia signed to Projekt Records. Projekt's interest was based on the earlier released Wake (on Orphanage Records) as well as numerous rough demos. But just prior to the official signing Lycia memeber John Fair left the band to join an established band as a touring member. Lycia's plans were abruptly changed and Mike VanPortfleet moved the band in a completely new, and at times much more aggressive direction.

Lycia is an American dark wave band formed in 1988 in Tempe, Arizona. The main personnel of the band are Mike VanPortfleet, Tara Vanflower and David Galas. Although only achieving minor cult success, the band is notable for being one of the ground breaking groups in darkwave and ethereal wave styles.

Safety In Numbers was formed in the Fall of 1989 in the Flint, Michigan area. It is a derivative of Arabian Fame and was later renamed Workstation in the summer of 1990. 1988 – present (31 years). Founded In. Tempe, Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. Lycia is an ethereal wave band from Tempe, Arizona, United States. Lycia's music is characterized by rich soundscapes and layers of echoed guitars, ethereal keyboards and doomy drum machine beats. In November, Welch was replaced by John Fair. In 1989, "Wake" was recorded, defining their droning ethereal guitar sound. John Fair left Lycia in 1990, and Will Welch returned.

Drown in Darkness – The Early Demos is a compilation album featuring the music of Paradise Lost from their demos made in 1988 and 1989. Tracks one through three is taken from the band's 1988 demo "Paradise Lost"; tracks four through six is taken from the band's 1989 demo "Frozen Illusion"; tracks seven through twelve is taken from the band's other 1989 demo "Plains of Desolation".
