The Jazz Messengers were an influential jazz combo that existed for over thirty-five years beginning in the early 1950s as a collective, and ending when long-time leader and founding drummer Art Blakey died in 1990. First off: Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, alto saxophonist Bobby Watson and tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce have come to the battle armed to the nines. In other words, they kick MAJOR butt on this studio disc recorded in Paris in 1981. Wynton, especially, takes no prisoners, and is utterly inspired, to say the least. Same with Watson, who bases his style on Bird, but has gone beyond Parker to do his own thing. And Bill Pierce seems to have developed a new hard bop tenor style, nodding to Coltrane, Rollins, Griffin and Henderson here and there, but ultimately becoming his own man.
