Mythodea - Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey is a 1993 choral symphony by Greek electronic composer and artist Vangelis. Originally premiered in concert in 1993, it was published in 2001 by Vangelis' new record label Sony Classical, which also set up the NASA connection and promoted a new concert

Vangelis seems to be doubling the string parts on his keyboards for the most part so his playing rarely stands out. But it is nice to see him performing his music. No surprise, then, that NASA used this choral symphony as the proper background for the launching of the Mars Odyssey Mission of 2001. Because of his personal interest in space exploration and his contributions to the "music of the spheres," astronomers have named a small planet after Vangelis; thus adding to the list of other illustrious small planets named Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart. For devotees of Greek mythology, this is a dignified and uplifting show.

Directed by Declan Lowney. With Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman, Vangelis.
