Seeing a picturesque row of cottages is like getting a cosy hug from the countryside. Stone buildings straight out of a storybook populate this northern town with a name that’s known by most in association with its most famous product: Bakewell pudding, a pastry casing with a bottom layer of jam and a frangipane filling.

Similarly, we did not include any villages. The beautiful thatched cottages and historic buildings are part of what makes this one of Ireland’s prettiest towns. There are also plenty of historical landmarks in Adare. It is possible to explore the ramparts of Desmond Castle, dating back to the 12th century, meanwhile Adare Manor has been converted into a luxury hotel and golf resort. Buildings in many Irish towns are daubed in colourful paints, but none as pleasantly as the small fishing town of Kinsale, located to the south of Cork. At one time the town became a prominent Royal Navy port and store houses were built in town. One of them, the James O’Neill building, can still be seen.
