This EP was Luna C's first attempt at releasing a gabber record, partly inspired by working with Brisk, who was playing a lot of Dutch hardcore at the time. But it was also inspired by comments from gabber producers (some of whom were lifting breakbeats from Kniteforce records for their tunes at the time) alleging that breakbeat was much easier to make than gabber (which was clearly nonsense!)The A side is built around a Roxette sample, which had already appeared on an early Kniteforce release. Except here, the breakbeats were switched for a fantastic kick which would go on to appear in most of the Psycangle records, sampled I'm pretty sure from Vibes & Wishdokta - Feel Good (although I don't know if that in turn took it from somewhere before). In a time when having a kickdrum different from most other records was unusual, even that alone makes it stand out. As this EP came out in 95, when the happy hardcore influence was at its strongest in Dutch hardcore, it's not surprising that it became a bit of a hit in Holland - and it's still a tune you hear occasionally in early hardcore sets in recent years. That, combined with the fact it was put together in a day, makes it a nice riposte to the aforementioned critics! The two tunes on the B side are no fillers either - Parallel World is less overtly happy, with no big vocal sample, although the riff in the middle is still on the sunny side. And B2 is a gem in its own right - starting out with a great Ice T sample, and using the vocal most familiar from the old Basement classic "We Can Rock It", in a relatively restrained way too (I mean, for a hardcore tune!)The overall design is perfect too - inspired in part by the airbrushed artwork on Ruffneck Records' sleeves at the time, but with the deliberate decision to use more a more abstract design than the usual gabber staples (skulls, monsters, aliens etc). The vinyl is white, again like most of the Ruffneck releases of the time. And as a final perfect touch, on the spine is written "A Kniteforce Production. Surprised?"Given that it was his first attempt at this style, it's incredible how strong this record is. Subsequent Malice releases, although all strong, do lean more towards the happy hardcore vibe - but this is the perfect mix. And seemingly impossible to top! From when I first heard it, many many years ago at a school disco (don't laugh)...although picking my favourite hardcore tune is very difficult, if pushed for an answer it's probably this.

Very informative! I remember Druid playing this at Helter Skelter, went and ordered it the next day. I was going to put it up for sale but having listened to it again it brought back some happy memories and I decided to keep it.
