Someone You Thought You'd Forgot Recorded in songwriter Martin Cohen’s flat, when the indefinite hiatus of Nine Black Alps meant the bassist found he had time on his hands, Milk Maid’s debut album ‘Yucca’, released on the 20th of June, is the sound of an artist moving out of the shadows of the rhythm section and delighting in the freedom of doing things his way. Milk Maid is more similar to a group like Sebadoh in musical and lyrical content, combining mostly sunny, pop-friendly melodies with macabre imagery and the occasional spate of abject self-loathing- at least in the handful of lyrics that you can make out. Cohen injects a little irony into "Such Fun", delivering the bouncy, jaunty tune- and its chorus of "'Round, 'round, 'round, and over again"- with an affect so distant, that it sounds like he's lamenting a tedious exercise, regardless of the slightly more energetic backing vocals that punctuate the . .Reportedly inspired by the recording approach of Sic Alps, but mostly lacking the bloodthirsty snarl the San Francisco basement dwellers capturing on tape, Yucca is almost split evenly between propulsive, driving, pop-influenced garage-rock tunes and downtempo almost-ballads covered in a thick topcoat of fuzz.

Its 40-50 species are notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal panicles of white or whitish flowers. They are native to arid parts of North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. It is also the debut album of Milk Maid. Yucca was recorded in Martin Cohen's flat with fellow Milk Maid members, Ian Hodson, Rick Entezari and Adam Carless.

Milk Maid mainman Martin Cohen once comprised one quarter of Nine Black Alps, which when you listen to ‘Yucca’ kinda makes sense, because it sounds a bit . But if that sounds like a slight against this album, then you’ve got us all wrong. Full of distortion-drenched vocals and slacker guitar lines, ‘Yucca’ is a brilliantly messy thing. Sitting between the lo-fi haze of Woods and the buoyant bounce of Black Lips, Milk Maid do scuzzy rackets (‘Such Fun’), ’60s sweetness (‘Dead Wrong’) and reverb-ridden downers (‘Back Of Your. Knees’) with equal aplomb.
