Joan Wasser (born July 26, 1970), known by her stage name Joan As Police Woman, is an American musician, singer-songwriter and producer. She began her career playing violin with the Dambuilders and played with Black Beetle, Antony and the Johnsons, and Those Bastard Souls. Since 2004 she has released her solo material as Joan As Police Woman. She has released five regular studio albums, one EP, a number of singles and a collection of covers.

At the point I felt the momentum had been lost and I was just involved in some rather shallow but mildly entertaining voyeurism, I decided to check out the new Joan as Police Woman lp "Real Life". Leaving the pictures rolling the title track slowly stirs into motion and I have to say it was just one of those beautiful coincidences that I live for, when two artforms combine to make something unforgettable.

Joan as Police Woman, like Blondie, is a band- also featuring the sterling Ben Perowsky and Rainy Orteca- but, as with the inspirational Angie Dickinson, it's essentially a one-woman show. Wasser has a distinguished résumé: a teenage punk and Mahler freak, she trained as a classical musician, played Hendrixian five-string violin in early 90s Bostonians The Dambuilders, and has performed and arranged in both Antony's Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright's band. The gorgeous title track breathily pleads "be reckless with me", but only in the context of post office queues and spectacles and gentlemen called Jonathan.
