Boom Bip's Seed to Sun isn't hip-hop. Hip-hop is dirty, concrete, in-your-face visceral, and reflective of an on-going public discourse. At its best, it works as a soundtrack to the prolonged moments of silence that accompany technological isolation. Yet this isn't another dry, droid-like testament.

Boom Bip's second album is pretty uneven, but the good songs it does have are very interesting. The rest, however, aren't as great.

And listeners expecting something special from an unknown granted a licensing to the quality-control experts at Warp won't be disappointed by Seed to Sun; it's experimental hip-hop being done on a level reached by few producers out there. More experimental, rangier, and lighter than any Co-Flow material, but more producer-driven than Kid Koala's records, the album encompasses analog electronics, beat-heavy experimental techno, turntablist scratching, and dozens of mostly unrecognizable samples (one strain that briefly emerges from the soup: .

Avant hip hop noises from Boom Bip, now signed to Warp's experimental urban imprint Lex. Olli Siebelt 2002. Streets ahead of his previous work, Seed To Sun sees Hollon dipping in and out of a prominent West coast/California psychedelic acid vibe that seems to permeate most of the tracks here. From the Beach Boys on muscle relaxants opener "Heads Must Roll", to "Third Sun" which sounds as if a Herbaliser record took heaps of acid and stayed out in the sun too long, there's a real "back to basics" approach to the production on this release. Instead of following the crowd, Hollon spends a lot of time bathing in the analogue sounds of the 70s rather than the digitally.

Seed To Sun' is one of most highly anticipated albums to have come along in quite a while. A hard album to categorize it finds Bryan Hollon aka Boom Bip adopting a fresh new sound that owes as much to classic songwriting structures as the abstract sonic tinkering of 'Circle' and the post jazzbeat grooving of 'Voodoo Science'. For starters catch the epic string harmonics on the addictive soul fulfilling opener 'Roads Must Road'.
