The genesis of the 'thumbpicking' method of guitar playing can be traced to Muehlenberg County, Kentucky. It originated in the hands of such musical legends as Arnold Schultz, Kennedy Jones and Amos Johnson; Mose Rager and Ike Everly (father of The Everly Brothers) helped expand the technique to cover a broader array of styles. Everly later mentored Merle Travis, who became a recording and film star in his own right and fathered an even later generation of thumbpickers
Nine Pound Hammer book. The performances compiled for this video by guitarist Pat Kirtley represent the best of today's Kentucky thumbpickers. Like Bluegrass, country music and zydeco, thumbpicking is unique to America's cultural landscape and it is the musical pride and joy of the place where it all began - Muhlenberg County Kentucky! Includes booklet of biographical material.
