The band name was inspired by a schizophrenic artist and friend in Akron, who used the term "black keys" to describe things he disliked or people he did not trust.

A little band called The Black Keys began with two long time friends from Akron, Ohio by the names of Patrick Carney (the drummer) and Dan Auerbach (the singer and guitarist). They debuted their very first album on May 14th, 2002 by the very suiting name "The Big Come Up".
