Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler, known as the Resurrection Symphony, was written between 1888 and 1894, and first performed in 1895. This symphony was one of Mahler's most popular and successful works during his lifetime. It was his first major work that established his lifelong view of the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. In this large work, the composer further developed the creativity of "sound of the distance" and creating a "world of its own", aspects already seen in his First Symphony

Leopold Stokowski, who conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in a concert of his own yesterday afternoon, was educated at the Royal College of Music but his experience as a conductor has been acquired chiefly in America. This programme was evidently designed chiefly with the object of showing his powers in various directions, for it contained familiar works which are, as it were, a conductor's test pieces. Stokowski's recording of the Mahler Symphony no 2 was made with the London Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, Brigitte Fassbaender mezzo-soprano, Margaret Price soprano. During July and August, some 9 sessions were done, including on 19 (for a recorded rehearsal), 22, 25, 27 July 1974 and 10, 11, 14 August 1974. Stokowski transcribed several movements from these works, and he recording two for in this 1974 album. Of the Chaconne, Charles O'Connell wrote

The satiric third movement Scherzo, based on a delightful Wunderhorn song about St. Anthony converting a school of fish with his preaching, seems to have no effect on Maazel, who delivers an uninspired run-through. One might as well skip to the brief "Urlicht" movement, here drawn out, but all the more reason to luxuriate in the sumptuous voice of Jessye Norman in her prime.

Since Leopold Stokowski led the first Philadelphia performances of the Fifth Symphony in March 1939, the Orchestra has performed the work many times, as well as featured it on domestic and international tours, including performances in Russia under Eugene Ormandy in 1958. Bartok Concerto for Orchestra. Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 is an intense and passionate work that may parallel some of the darkest moments in his life. The album closes with a chamber work composed when Mahler was only a teenager-his Piano Quartet in A minor. The recording features Christoph Eschenbach on piano as well as Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim. Friends of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
