Mystery Jets’ third album gracefully marries the imagination of debut Making Dens to the pop ambition of follow-up Twenty One. And for a record about failed love, it’s defiantly vibrant. Show Me the Light fuses chiming indie-rock with house basslines and percolating synths, while the title track fashions an unshakeable, stadium-grade chorus from isolation and loss. On the shoegazing grind of "Lorna Doone" though, they know just how to dim the light and re-engage with strangeness. Serotonin Mystery Jets.

Opening line "Freedom is an illusion generated by our brain" raises false hopes that Mystery Jets have moved on to weightier topics than fancying the girl next door. If anything, the Chiswick band have taken a musical step backwards from Twenty One, although Serotonin has some likeable, 1980s sheen. But there's too much bog-standard indie rock in between, with some dull piano balladry and a ponderous finale. A not unpleasant 45 minutes, but better enjoyed in three-minute snatches.
