Sprained Ankle is the debut album of American singer-songwriter Julien Baker. Originally self-released on Bandcamp as an EP, the album was re-released in October 2015 on 6131 Records. The songs on Sprained Ankle were written by Baker while she was at MTSU. She thought that they didn't "fit the vibe of Forrister" and didn't intend to release them as an album while writing. Her friend, Michael Hegner, had free time at MTSU's studio and offered to record her songs

Sprained Ankle is a solo, singer-songwriter album, but very little of it would be considered "folky. Julien Baker's extremely intimate songs operate in existential ultimatums-life or death, hope or despair, oblivion or epiphany. These are redemption songs that sound as raw as they feel. If Julien Baker wasn't cracking something close to a smile on the cover of Sprained Ankle, I wouldn't be certain that it was meant for public consumption. Much of the album was written in isolation-after Baker left Memphis for Middle Tennessee State University, she worked on these songs in a soundproof booth within the campus music building.

Instead of beefing up her honest tunes with rich layering like Natalie Prass or Matthew E. White, Baker pares her songs down to their simplest possible format: alone, singing and playing acoustic guitar directly into the microphone, sometimes in a single take. That decision resulted in a remarkable record, one full of beautiful, personal explorations revealed in stark intimacy. The album later closes on Go Home, a song full of suicidal imagery: needles, meds, bleach. It also features a piano arrangement of a hymn called In Christ Alone and bits of church radio that accidentally fed into her preamp during recording. It’s a disconcerting way to end the album.
