An Empty Bliss Beyond This World is a studio album of The Caretaker, an ambient music project of English musician James Kirby. The LP uses samples of pre-World War II vinyl ballroom jazz records Kirby bought very cheaply at a Brooklyn store in December 2010

Musically, this album might be compared to Philip Jeck's manipulated vinyl tracts, featuring similarly oceanic swells of crackle and dust, with faded pianos or big band sounds wafting wraith-like across the mix.

Things have been rearranged in places and other things brought in and out of focus. Surface noise"- which is abundant- "is from the original vinyls. Kirby is an artist whose concepts are sometimes more fun to engage with than his music.

Unfortunately, I didn't win the Best Job in the World- the position of 'Wildlife Caretaker' went to Canadian Greg Snell, and congratulations to him. Thank you all for your love and support throughout this process- it has been a wild ride, and an incredible experience. Thanks to Australia, Australian Working Holiday, and South Australia "Gone Wild" for an EPIC trip DownUnder- I hope to see you all again soon! CHEERS!!!!

The Caretaker is a long-running project by electronic musician James Leyland Kirby, who also records as V/Vm. His work under the Caretaker moniker has been characterised as exploring memory and the gradual deteoriation of it, nostalgia, and melancholia. Initially the project was inspired by the haunted ballroom scene in the 1980 film The Shining, with his first several releases consisting of treated and manipulated samples of '30s ballroom pop recordings.

Moreso than any other album I've heard in 2011, this leaves me wondering exactly how I'm meant to react. The Caretaker achieves that feeling through some impressively subtle manipulation and recontextualisation. There is lots of crackling, popping, and hissing, which is par for the course when sampling from vinyl recordings as old as these, but that noise is embraced rather than downplayed, and used as just an important part of the overall effect as the melodies and chords are.

The Caretaker project began in late 1996 in Stockport, England by Leyland Kirby, undoubtedly inspired from the ballroom scene in Stanley Kubrick's "Shining". The first release played and extended this theme of altering 1920s and 1930s ballroom music creating an eerie and haunted soundworld.

Then there’s The Caretaker, a popular solo project best summed up by the title of its downcast 1999 debut, Selected Memories From the Haunted Ballroom. It’s easy to find parallels between William Basinski ’s mesmerizing work and The Caretaker, but while Kirby acknowledges his admiration of the producer, he insists his own compositions aren’t just loops breaking down. That concept is on full display on the newest Caretaker LP, Everywhere At the End of Time.
