Barrett is the second and final studio album of new material released by former Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett. Recording began at Abbey Road Studios on 26 February 1970, and lasted for 15 sessions until 21 July. The album was produced by Pink Floyd's guitarist David Gilmour and keyboardist Richard Wright, who also contributed on bass guitar and keyboards respectively, along with previous Madcap contributor Jerry Shirley on drums.

Crazy Diamond - Pete Anderson. Chapter One. Remember When You. Were Young. Roger Keith Barrett was born at 60 Glisson Road, Cambridge, on January 6, 1946, the fourth of five children raised by Dr Arthur Max Barrett and his wife Winifred. He was a dark-haired child with laughing eyes who resembled his father more closely than the rest of the brood, inheriting not only Dr Barrett’s artistic ability and love of music but also his exceptionally warm personality. Dr Barrett was a member of the Cambridge Philharmonic Society and there was always music in the household. He was a popular figure in the town where he worked as a university and hospital pathologist following a brilliant university career in London. Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge contains a Barrett Room to this day.

But this was the "crazy diamond" himself: Syd Barrett, the subject of the song. He was the most famous "acid casualty" of his generation, and the writer of much of the original material of the group, from which he had been ejected because of his drug-induced eccentricities. When Roger Waters saw his old friend, he broke down. and I didn't recognise him. I said, 'Who's that guy behind you?' 'That's Syd'.

Image caption Syd Barrett was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd and played with the group until 1968. Why has it taken so long for the city to fully honour its "Crazy Diamond"? "He wasn't in any way a pop star - he never understood celebrity. Rosemary Breen prefers to think of her late brother as Roger, a man who lived a quiet life in Cambridge and who was at his happiest when painting. The plans have been a year in the making and have been spearheaded by Cambridge Live's operations director Neil Jones, himself a big fan of Pink Floyd and its former star, Syd.

With some of the songs repeated two, three, or even four times, this is definitely for the hardcore fan. But it's a beautifully produced document, with a meticulously detailed booklet, of a uniquely primitive visionary, and has many moments of charming and chilling power. It includes everything salvageable that he produced, with the exception of the Peel Sessions. It doesn't match his work with the original Pink Floyd, but the music continues to influence and be emulated (most notably by Robyn Hitchcock), though never equaled. Track Listing - Disc 1. Sample.
