Katorz is the eleventh studio album and fourteenth release overall by the Canadian heavy metal band Voivod, released on July 25, 2006. The name of the album is a phonetic spelling of "quatorze", the French word for fourteen. Demos for the album had been made, but before the band could properly begin recording it guitarist Denis D'Amour (. Piggy) died on August 25, 2005 due to colon cancer

In fact, Katorz was the best Voivod album to have come out in 15 years (since Angel Rat), and even though it's dropped down a few percentile pegs on my listening board, I still love it through and through. The production here is nothing fancy, a little less fleshed out than the prior album; the band involved Glen Robinson, who has quite the resume, but it still feels open, raw and honest.

So as a tribute of sorts to their friend, Voivod finished off a handful of these tracks, and issued them as 2006's Katorz (a title that the late guitarist had scrawled on a CD demo). Interestingly, although they're known primarily for prog-metal explorations (remember the near 20-minute "Jack Luminous?"), Voivod are at their most straightforward and economical on Katorz, especially such tracks as "Dognation" and the album opening "The Getaway.
