Israela Margalit is an American concert pianist, recording artist, playwright and television writer. Margalit was born in Haifa, Israel. She studied piano and began performing in Israel at age thirteen. Israela Margalit is an American concert pianist, recording artist, playwright and television writer. She studied at conservatories in Tel Aviv, Paris and Munich before performing with fifty major orchestras worldwide. She became a concert pianist and performed for 50 major orchestras around the world, conducted by Lorin Maazel.
She wrote and produced a television documentary discussing, among other things, the two composers featured on this UCJ album: Alfred Schnittke & Dmitry Shostakovich. It's regrettable for her listeners that some of her academic insight into these two composers was not included in the liner notes that make no mention whatsoever of the music at hand. The notes are not the only shortcoming on the production end of this album; the tracklisting is a disaster. ISRAELA MARGALIT offered three major works for the piano at her Alice Tully Hall recital on Friday night, three invitations to make three very different kinds of musical statements. While Miss Margalit's cultured pianism was never less than correct and wellmannered, she politely declined to turn these pieces into the sort of powerfully compelling individual conceptions these composers obviously intended them to be. Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue was given a safe, middle-ofthe-road reading, neither overtly Romantic in tone nor excessively detached in articulation

Israela Margalit is an internationally renowned concert pianist and recording artist. She has recorded extensively for EMI, Chandos, Black Box, Resonance, Koch International and Decca. Her plays Night Blooming Jasmine and 3 O’clock in Brooklyn have been performed in New York to great acclaim. Her play Trio was recently premiered in Moscow, where it continues to enjoy tremendous success.
