Merry Clayton (born December 25, 1948) is an American soul and gospel singer and an actress. She provided a number of backing vocal tracks for major performing artists in the 1960s, most notably in her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter". Clayton is featured in 20 Feet from Stardom, the Oscar-winning documentary about background singers and their contributions to the music industry.

The session singer Merry Clayton, best known for her fire-starting vocal runs on the Rolling Stones’ song Gimme Shelter, was still reaching new highs when she was involved in a serious car accident last year. Just a few months before the June 2014 crash, the film 20 Feet From Stardom, which put backup singers including Ms. Clayton front and center, won an Academy Award for best documentary, after its Grammy victory for best music film. Oh my God, I was at the pinnacle - I was at the top of my game, she said recently in her first interview since the accident. It’s not an easy task, but I am just so determined, Ms. Clayton said of her rehabilitation. If I was determined enough to make it out of that hospital alive and better, I can certainly forge straight ahead.

But take out Merry Clayton’s wail and what have you got? A pretty good Stones tune, granted, but it’s no Gimme Shelter. Her contributions make this an uncannily haunting song, a warning from some ancient tragic chorus, a frenzied Sibylline prophecy, and I think I’m underselling it. How did she come to haunt this song? Hear her tell it in the video at the top, an excerpt from, 20 Feet from Stardom, the documentary that gives unsung backing singers some long-overdue exposure.
