The gorgeous earthiness of opener Cut Me Down fails to hint at the scope of what’s to come: I Have Been to the Mountain -with its psych-rock fuzziness, grandiose religious imagery, and gospel backing vocals-instead serves notice of Morby’s intent. These are inventive folk epics, each scaling fresh terrain.

When pressing play on Singing Saw, Kevin Morby’s third solo album, it’s a surprise to find that the weary voice behind this contemplative, spiritual work is only 28. Further, Morby’s career to this point has been lengthy and loaded, having spent extensive tenures as both the bassist for psych folk group Woods and the co-vocalist for The Babies, his group with Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls. Morby chose the name Singing Saw for his album as it represents the duality of a tool that has a functional, destructive intent and also an instrument that can be used to make serene music, a noble aim to aspire to, as one could describe his workmanlike, prolific approach to making music in a similar manner. It would be even better if he didn’t refer to the saw multiple times throughout the record, but restraint isn’t quite Morby’s intention on any aspect of the record, which mostly works to his favor.

Kevin Morby’s album Singing Saw takes the railroad sentiment of his first two records into a more expansive direction. The house belongs to some of Morby’s first friends in the city; 10 years ago, right after he moved to New York, he used to babysit for the family in exchange for rent. He was 18 then, raised in the Midwest on a small-town punk scene and an arsenal of Bob Dylan records that eventually set him on a course into Neutral Milk Hotel, the Mountain Goats, the Microphones, and a classic r Americana wanderlust story. I didn’t know anyone in New York when I came here, maybe two people, he says.
