Robert Joseph Bare Sr. (born April 7, 1935) is an American country music singer and songwriter, best known for the songs "Detroit City" and "500 Miles Away from Home". He is the father of Bobby Bare J. also a musician. In the 1950s, Bare repeatedly tried and failed to sell his songs.
The success of Bare’s good-natured, family album Singin’ In The Kitchen, was marred by the death of his daughter, Cari, in 1976. Bare, never one to stand still, took chances by recording such strange, controversial material as ‘Dropkick Me Jesus (Through The Goalposts Of Life)’ and the expletive-driven ‘Redneck Hippie Romance’. He returned to the mainstream with the superb Bare in 1978, which included laid-back ballads (‘Too Many Nights Alone’, ‘Childhood Hero’) and the hilarious ‘Greasy Grit Gravy’ with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Dr. Hook. Bare’s singles for Columbia Records included ‘The Jogger’, ‘Tequila Sheila’, ‘Gotta Get Rid Of This Band’, ‘When Hippies Get Older’ and ‘Numbers’, inspired by the Dudley Moore movie 10. In 1998, Bare, along with veteran artists Jennings, Mel Tillis and Jerry Reed formed the Old Dogs for a single recording session.
A true country music giant, Bobby Bare scored nearly five dozen top 40 hits from 1962 to 1983.
Although Bare had recorded a song or two of Shel's before, this was the first time that he devoted a full album to his material.
I was sittin' in Friday's suckin' on a glass of wine When in walked a chick who almost struck me blind Had wet blue eyes and her legs were long and fine On a scale of one to ten, I'd give her a nine. Now on my scale there ain't no ten's, you know Nine is about as far as any chick can go So I flashed her a smile, but she didn't even look at me So for brains and good judgement, I'd give her a three. She said, well, another one of those macho-matician men Kind who grade all women on scales of one to ten And, you give me an eight, well, that's a generous thing to do Now, let's just see, just how much I give you. She said you comin' on to me with that phony numbers jive Your style makes me smile, I give it a five When you walked up I noticed that suit of (yores) It's last year's double-knit frayed-cuffs, give it a four.
Recorded by Bobby Bare. Written by Shel Silverstein. I was sittin' here Friday suppin' on a glass of wine. When in walked a chick who almost struck me blind. Had wet blue eyes and her legs were long and fine. On a scale of ONE to TEN (pause) I'd give her a NINE.
