Each track on "Vögguvìsur Yggdrasils" is based on one of the 9 worlds of Norse mythology - from the creation story of ice and fire, all the way through to the afterlife for the lowly: Helheim. Surely a ripe premise for an artistic voyage - so how does it fare musically? In terms of an odyssey - there was far more scope for a variety of musical ideas than is actually explored. One perfect aspect of "Vögguvìsur Yggdrasils" is Björgvin Sigurðsson's barbarian vocal performance. The vocal patterns for every Skalmold album are almost prehistorically simple - giving him the nickname of the 'charismatic caveman' in my mind. There isn't much in the way of riffs, but the folk melodies driven by the lead guitars are infectious enough to keep things interesting.
