Rick Derringer (born Ricky Dean Zehringer; August 5, 1947) is an American guitarist, vocalist, Grammy Award-winning producer and entertainer. He came to prominence in the 1960s as a member of the McCoys, when he was brought in to record lead vocals for the number-one hit single with "Hang On Sloopy". He then turned to blues rock, scoring a 1974 hit with "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo".

Released in 1976, Derringer was the debut for Rick Derringer's eponymous band that featured Vinny Appice on drums. Derringer was best known as a member of the McCoys and as a member of the Winter brother's bands. He made a couple of good solo albums that flirted with hard rock and pop. Here he aims for straight-ahead hard rock and ends up with a mediocre album that shows a distressing drop-off in quality.

As usual, Derringer’s flashy guitar histrionics are the main attraction. And there are a few nice surprises that make the album more than an excuse for Rick to show off his licks. The rockabilling Mistake Magnifique and poppy, danceable White Heat are a departure from the hard-rock leanings of Side One. The vocal duet with Bonnie Tyler on When Love Attacks is also a highlight. Good Dirty Fun is recommended for fans of heavy pop-rock.

The All American Boy album has great Rick Derringer guitar work and the tunes are heavily influenced by the Dan Hartman/Edgar Winter sound of the era, The Spring Fever album is how I remembered it; definitely not as strong as All American Boy. Spring Fever is very indicitive of Rick Derringer's lifelong inability to find his own sound/style. Though Derringer's 1974 solo debut "All American Boy" was commercially overshadowed by its anthemic hit "Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo," the album is as memorable as the single. Derringer brought his pop and garage sensibilities with him from The McCoys, and his singing, guitar playing, songwriting, bandleading and production talents only got stronger in his associations with Edgar and Johnny Winter.
