Their latest release, the debut LP from Milan producer Haf Haf, is their stongest yet; more than any other, it lives up to the label’s promise of being primitive, presenting bad painting challenging the definition of good painting, as Haf Haf’s synth lines and distorted vocal samples writhe like mutant bodies on a bed of scratchy techno and hip hop beats

Haf Haf - Notch Italy's mysterious Gang Of Ducks has scratched out an intriguing but barely legible modus operandi. Their records are stubbornly unpredictable, hard to follow and even harder to describe. That quality has made them one of the more exciting new labels of the past year, with music from Traag, My Panda Shall Fly and others consistently defying expectations. Like a primitive Demdike Stare record, Notch is a hodgepodge of sludgy beats and disembodied hip-hop samples. Listening to it is like walking through a haunted house, where patches of uneasy silence give way to loud outbursts. Haf Haf's percussion is almost always sampled, but not in a way you'd expect. The thunderous drums on "Hybrid" sound as if they're ten feet in front of you, and elsewhere the sounds come from behind or to the side.

Haf Haf is a seemingly off the radar concern that occupies a similar territory of hyper detailed machine ramblings anchored by a rhythm but not bound to it. There are moments that latch onto a more focused compositional path, such as Hybrid with its loping 4/4 beat, but for the most part Notch is a celebration of cutting loose and creating a merry noise. There are recorded in the room jams such as the title track, and there is a repeated embrace of pitched down hip hop vocals, and it s likely you won t hear many records quite like Haf Haf s debut this year. Emergent oddball analogue label Gang of Ducks is at it once again, having already charmed our weird receptors with the My Panda Shall Fly LP late last year. Milan’s Haf Haf arrives on the burgeoning Gang Of Ducks imprint with a persuasive album of wayward takes on techno. Flow Node B’ and ‘Gate Keeper’ reign the producer’s dusty electronics around a thudding kick to strangely unique effect, with the former’s fragile percussion sounds seemingly on the point of collapse as they attempt to orient the listener amidst disorientating swells of noise.
