L'enfance du Christ (The Childhood of Christ), Opus 25, is an oratorio by the French composer Hector Berlioz, based on the Holy Family's flight into Egypt (see Gospel of Matthew 2:13). Berlioz wrote his own words for the piece. Most of it was composed in 1853 and 1854, but it also incorporates an earlier work La fuite en Egypte (1850).
L’Enfance du Christ is a creation of supreme beauty. The best-known section, The Shepherds’ Farewell, is a glorious blend of warm woodwind sounds, sublime choral harmonies and sensitive orchestral accompaniment. Berlioz was certainly a passionate composer, with a love of writing very red-blooded, romantic music. He was also clearly capable of creating music with a sense of complete serenity, touching simplicity, and ethereal beauty.

Hector Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ is a unique work, somewhere between an opera and an oratorio, favoring soloists over the chorus but coming to rest in lyrical moments that Berlioz himself, not a religious man, built into the text that lend the work a kind of gentle mysticism. Berlioz himself called the work a tragédie sacrée. It's a tricky dynamic to strike for the conductor. Colin Davis was a specialist in the work who could handle the soloists in the right way, and Sir Andrew Davis, his namesake if not his relative, has picked up the mantle.

Louis Hector Berlioz (11th December 1803–8th March 1869) was a French Romantic composer best known for the Symphonie fantastique, first performed in 1830, and for his Requiem - Grande messe des morts - of 1837, with its tremendous resources that include four antiphonal brass choirs. Berlioz was born in France at La Côte-Saint-André in the département of Isère, between Lyon and Grenoble. His father was a physician, and young Hector was sent to Paris to study medicine at the age of eighteen.
