Knowles was a founding member of the Fluxus movement, the experimental avant-garde group formally founded in 1962. Alison Knowles (right) performing one of her pieces on stage with her daughter Hannah Higgins at the Fluxus Semicentenary in San Francisco, CA in September, 2011.

Alison Knowles first performed Proposition Make a Salad in 1962 at a Fluxus concert at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. Declared New Music by Cage and termed Intermedia by Dick Higgins, Knowles’ event score proposes the following: Make a salad. When Knowles performs it, she does precisely that, prepping and tossing a massive salad on a contemporary concert and serving it to everyone attending.

Alison Knowles is an American artist, who was one of the most active Fluxus artists. She was married to Dick Higgins, and music has played an important part in her art, particularly in her performances. In the early 1960s, she was involved in New York City artistic communities and happenings. During this time she began producing scores; events that rework everyday activities into performances that incorporate music. Featured Image: Alison Knowles (courtesy of alchetron. Wolf Vostell - Television as Art Object. Wolf Vostell was a German artist, one of the pioneers of Happening and Fluxus,.

The tin also contains dried beans, which create a rattling sound as the container is handled. In the 1960s, Knowles expanded on this performative aspect of Bean Rolls by staging readings with multiple participants.

Knowles's inclusion of visual, aural, and tactile elements in her performances sets her art apart from the work of other Fluxus artists. lt;/p
