After swinging from no wave experimentalism to internationalist grooves on her first four albums, Lizzy Mercier Descloux was asked to do something new on LP Number Five: deliver a sure-fire hit. Released in 1984, Zulu Rock produced a surprise hit single in Europe, "Mais où Sont Passées les Gazelles?," but EMI Records wanted bigger returns for her fifth album, especially after the critical and commercial disappointment of 1986's One for the Soul.

Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Once Upon a Time Out, 03:35.
By the time bohemian singer/poet/artist Lizzy Mercier Descloux recorded her fifth album, 1988’s Suspense, she’d enjoyed a recording career that was as far from the clichés of music lore as is possible, flitting between genres, continents and collaborators, enjoying great success and equally great failure and even stealing the final breaths of master trumpeter Chet Baker for 1986’s.
Lizzy Mercier Descloux (1956 - 2004) was a French singer born in Paris. She died in obscurity in April 2004, 20 years after what was ostensibly her musical heyday. A Lyon-born art school dropout and devotee of Rimbaud and Godard, she was every bit the romantic French archetype, as well as an innovator and witness to numerous pivotal moments in musical and cultural history.
Barnes, Mercier Descloux formed the performance art duo Rosa Yemen, and recorded an eponymous mini-album for ZE in 1978. The following year, ZE released her solo debut LP, "Press Color". recorded "One for the Soul" (1986) in Brazil with the jazz trumpeter Chet Baker, and "Suspense" (1988) in London with the British musician Mark Cunningham of Mars. She also acted, composed film scores, and wrote poetry. In the mid 1990s, she moved to Corsica and devoted herself to painting and to writing an unpublished novel.
