Blacks And Blues broke into both the US R&B (N. 8) and pop charts (N. 4) in April 1974, but its success was eclipsed by that of the flautist’s next album, 1975’s Fancy Dancer. Even so, Blacks And Blues remains the go-to album in Bobbi Humphrey’s canon, and the fact that all its tracks have been sampled by a variety of hip-hop artists in the decades since adds to its value. The Queen of Chicago Blues’ second album was her first for Chess Records, and features her signature song Wang Dang Doodle. That hit single was written by Willie Dixon, who also produced the record and played bass on several tracks alongside such session guitarists as Buddy Guy and Matt Guitar Murphy.
