The Complete Recordings, Vol. 4: 1951-1952. Memphis Slim's The Complete Recordings, Vol. 4 includes 22 tracks recorded between 1951 and 1952. The majority of tracks feature an early incarnation of Slim's band, the House Rockers, which usually included at least two saxophones. This is uptown big-city blues recorded in an era when smooth crooners - similar to what Charles Brown was doing at the time - were all the rage. Unlike Brown, Slim utilized uptempo tunes that negated his attempts to fit into that mellow mold. All of the tracks are top-notch, with the exception of the five tunes featuring vocalist Terry Timmons

Complete Recordings (1945-1947), Vol. 4. Play album. Go to artist profile. Cecil Gant (April 4, 1913 - February 4, 1951) was an American blues singer and pianist. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Gant worked local clubs through the mid 1930s up until the Second World War, when he enlisted in the United States Army. Though his piano was blues-based, vocally he was a crooner of considerable cross-over appeal. It happened when a friend of mine let me listen to a vinyl recording of Furtwangler conducting Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Of course I was familar with the fifth, (who isn't?), having heard countless recordings of it by then. But this one was unlike any of the others. Right from the opening phrase, the timing was somehow different - some notes seemed to be held too long - others seemed to be cut off too soon. And yet the whole performance was incredibly powerful. But the live performances on this album are electrifying, and for the same reasons. Furtwangler was a great conductor in the studio, but when you put him in front of a live audience, something astonishing happened.
