Image caption Paul Mealor has been reflecting on an 'unbelievable' 2011. The Welsh composer behind the Military Wives' hit says the hope of a Christmas No 1 single caps a "remarkable" year. Denbighshire-born Paul Mealor was asked by conductor Gareth Malone to write Wherever You Are for his TV choir series. It came after the Duchess of Cambridge requested his music Ubi caritas for her wedding to Prince William in April. His classical album, A Tender Light, has already become Christmas number one in the specialist album chart.
The music is set to a poem compiled from letters to and from the servicemen and their wives on a 6-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. For the few people who criticize this song they should learn how and why it was made and the most important factor is, all the people involved made not one penny. The lyrics are made from couples sharing personal thoughts with each other under stressful cicumstances, so these citics should have gone to Wotton Bassett, when some never made it back, then onto the hostpitals where many are badly wounded.
Wherever you are my love will keep you safe, My heart will build a bridge of light across both time and space. Wherever you are, our hearts still beat as one I hold you in my dreams each night until your task is done Light up the darkness, my wondrous star Our hopes and dreams, my heart and yours, forever shining far Light up the darkness, my prince of peace.

But it seems Gareth Malone is rather changing his tune with his latest offering. The 37-year-old choirmaster is releasing an album in which a group of singers will cover hardcore rap, rock and pop songs. Malone – who became a household name in 2006 through BBC2 series The Choir, in which he taught comprehensive school pupils how to sing – says the work will be a ‘watershed’ project that will encourage British choirs to experiment with works beyond the traditional repertoire.
