sigur rós began hastily recording ágætis byrjun in august 1998, with a release date set for october 1998. they soon realised they would never be satisfied with the quality of the album in time for the release. they bought themselves some time to fine-tune the record and the release date was changed to june 12th 1999, a date which miraculously stuck. see ási's memories for the inside story on the album's production and release. on the 12th of june 1999 at the icelandic opera house in reykjavík, the album was launched
Sigur Rós' 1997 debut album Von found a US and UK release in October 2004. Samskeyti) from the album is used on the video 6AM by film maker Carmen Vidal, winner of the 2006 Student Academy Award. In autumn 2008 Sigur Rós embarked on a world tour supporting their newly released album. The band played as a four-piece without Amiina and the brass band, the first time the band had played as a four-piece in seven years. A reissue of the band's second album, Ágætis byrjun, was announced by the band in early 2015. It was announced to feature previously unheard studio and live recordings as well as photographic and documentary material from their personal archives.
With their second album, Ágætis byrjun, Sigur Rós knew only that they wanted to make things bigger. Their first record, 1997’s Von, was dark and, by the standards of what they became famous for, positively screechy: Back then, they were inspired by the hurtling propulsion of Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine, bands that generated soothing textures from cacophony. Before Ágætis, post-rock was a niche concern, a tiny sub-sub-genre centered around a dozen or so bands in England and North America- Stereolab, Bark Psychosis and a few others in London; Tortoise and Gastr del Sol in Chicago; Godspeed You! Black Emperor in Montreal. After Ágætis, the sound-massive, surging, triumphal; melancholic and soothing and mostly major-key; wreathed in strings and horns and ripe with melodrama and headlocking you into transcendence-is a global phenomenon.
gætis byrjun is the second album from the Icelandic post-rock group Sigur Rós. In English, the album’s title means a good beginning or an alright start. The title of the album came from a friend who, after he listened to an early version of the title track, told the band that it was a good start. The album’s sound is a mix of spacial, ethereal soundscapes and loud distortion. The album was released in Iceland in 1999 and through word.
) is the third full-length album from Icelandic band Sigur Rós, first released in February 2002. It comprises eight untitled tracks, divided into two parts: the first four tracks are lighter and more optimistic, while the latter four are bleaker and more melancholic.
Icelandic post-rock icons Sigur Rós will reissue their 1999 album Ágætis byrjun across seven LPs via Krunk Records this June. Widely acclaimed as the album which propelled Sigur Rós to an international audience, Ágætis byrjun was originally released on Smekkleysa, and appears here alongside an extensive box set three LPs of demos, rarities and alternate versions.
Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun (Full album backwards) 71:59. Sigur Rós - Olsen Olsen 8:05. Svefn-g-englar 9:27. Ambient by innerspaceboy. Haze, ljudevit, ooni, Gecks, raulus, milkman, Grantel, lagidigear, betonarme, ultravioletnikki, Myrkvi174, laardi, unclecaintoad.
Even on aesthetic matters, Sigur Rós entitle their sophomore effort not in a manner to play up the irony of high expectations (à la the Stone Roses' Second Coming), but in a modest realization. This second album - Ágætis Byrjun - translates roughly to Good Start. So as talented as Von might have been, this time out is probably even more worthy of dramatic debut expectations. Indeed, Ágætis Byrjun pulls no punches from the start.
