However with Critical Mass a compilation curated by Cherrystones, I have achieved a first in the 35-plus years I have been listening to music: I do not know any of the bands or songs on this at all. It’s quite an incredible feat considering how many bands and records I have heard over the years, but when I first looked at the tracklist and the album’s aim to highlight the darker and less obvious side of post-punk I was, to put it lightly, slightly compelled.
Word (And the Sympathetic Sounds of the Psychedelic Ghetto).
Eight years have passed since Cherrystones stayed true to his Word and compiled the sympathetic sounds of the psychedelic ghetto. We’ve reached Critical Mass and we need to wipe the slate clean. Cherrystones tunes us in to fourteen groups separated by locale but united by a restless urge to create on their own terms. From Rizzo’s nihilistic Moogie-boogie to a pre-teen Chandra’s isolated no-wave
I'm not sure whether Gareth Goddard (aka Cherrystones) describes himself as a crate digger, but it's a milieu he's closely associated with. Of the tracks influenced by/contributing to the funky/Afrobeat division of post-punk, probably the pick of the bunch is by the Dutch group Dojoji. While some bands of that time deployed funk as a tangled signifier for the speed of life, Dojoji opt for space and groove on 'Quincunx', its skittering guitar, occasional horns and clattering percussion playing off against a fat, militant bassline.
The Psychedelic Sounds Of’ the 13 Floor Elevators was a debut set that was probably the first album to include the ‘P’ word to a soon to be turned on public, but it was the band’s second set, ‘Easter Everywhere’, that really drove the lysergic message home. Roky Erickson’s soulful Texas wail over Tommy Hall’s electric jug on ‘Slip Inside This House’ is a classic eight minute psychedelic mantra, as covered by Primal Scream. 6 Various Artists, ‘The Psychedelic Snarl’. Bam Caruso’s ‘Rubble’ series was the UK’s answer to ‘Nuggets’
Psychedelic folk (sometimes acid folk or freak folk) is a loosely defined form of psychedelia that originated in the 1960s. It retains the largely acoustic instrumentation of folk, but adds musical elements common to psychedelic music. Psychedelic folk generally favors acoustic instrumentation although it often incorporates other instrumentation. Chanting, early music and various non-Western folk music influences are often found in psych folk.
