Folders doesn't offer any kind of narrative- not of Flügel's career, not of a broader music scene, not even intra-album. On display instead is the sheer variety of sounds Flügel conjures, and how vibrant they seem in his arrangements. If Flügel has a trick- though he is not really the type of producer who relies on them- it's saving his tiniest, most erudite melodies for his bangers and getting big-eyed and starry during his softer moments.

Roman Flügel ‎– Fatty Folders. Label: Dial ‎– dial CD 23, Dial ‎– Dial CD 23. Format: CD, Album. Roman Flügel steps away momentarily from his Alter Ego to explore some FATTY FOLDERS, and with "How To Spread Lies" sets out on a mellow tech-house journey, while "Lush Life Libido" hints at some funk, and "Bahia Blues Bootcamp" gets extra blippy. The deeper tones on "The Improviser" have a menace to them, while the brief interlude of 'Krautus" sounds almost like a Tomita track.

Roman Flugel - Fatty Folders Few producers in electronic music have reveled in sonic idiosyncrasies over their career like Roman Flügel. A renowned sound designer and meticulous craftsman, Flügel's issued music from acid house to heavily textured IDM and techno under guises like Alter Ego and Soylent Green to Eight Miles High and Sensorama. If it's tempting, given the label on which it arrives and the singles that precede it, to consider the album Flügel's foray into the fleecier ends of the house spectrum, it's soon clear just how little the producer's willing to confine himself to downy, late night fare. In some ways, it's an assembly of the various nom-de-recordings he's invented over the years, but with the cohesion and exactitude that any such compilation would necessarily lack. Sure, there's more hyper-refined house.
