Omara Portuondo Peláez (born 29 October 1930) is a Cuban singer and dancer. A founding member of the popular vocal group Cuarteto d'Aida, Portuondo has collaborated with many important Cuban musicians during her long career, including Julio Gutiérrez, Juanito Márquez and Chucho Valdés. Although primarily known for her rendition of boleros, she has recorded in a wide range of styles from jazz to son cubano

Omara Portuondo (born in Havana, Cuba on 29 October 1930) is a Cuban singer whose career has spanned over half a century. Portuondo was born in October 1930 in Havana, one of three sisters; her mother came from a wealthy Spanish family, and had created a scandal by running off with and marrying a black professional baseball player. Omara started her career in 1945 as a dancer at Havana's Tropicana Club (following her older sister, Haydee).

Omara Portuondo Pelaez was born on October 29, 1930, in Cayo Hueso, Havana. She was born of an Afro Cuban father Bartolo Portuondo and a Spanish Cuban mother Esperanza Pelaez. Her parents were a mismatch to society then. Bartolo was a Negro baseball player, while Esperanza was from a wealthy family of Spanish origin. Omara was one of the four sisters. Omara joined the dance group Cabaret Tropicana in 1950. In 1958 she recorded her first album Magia Negra, with the label Velvet. Her sister left for the US leaving the quartet. Omara continued with the trio until 1967. In 1961, the Cuban-American relations soured to the brink of war. The American forces unsuccessfully invaded Cuba. After the Bay of Pigs debacle, the Soviets stationed their nuclear missiles in Cuba. Cuba severed diplomatic relations with the US.
